Life with an Idiot by Ushev won the Best Film award at the Beijing Short Film Festival

The short animated film Life with an Idiot by the world-renowned Bulgarian director Theodore Ushev has won the award for Best Film at the Beijing Short Film Festival. The news was announced personally by the author on his Facebook profile, where he shared his joy over the achievement and thanked his team.

The animation was honored alongside several other international productions, but it was Ushev’s film that received the festival’s highest recognition—the Grand Prize awarded by the jury. This is an exceptional success, as the competition includes works from a wide range of genres: fiction, documentary, experimental, and animated films.

In his post, Ushev emphasizes that it is very rare for animated films to win the top awards at festivals where all genres compete together. According to him, this makes the accolade even more valuable, because it places animation on an equal footing with other forms of cinema and shows that the film’s messages were understood and appreciated by an international audience.

Another important detail is the composition of the jury. The award was presented by a committee chaired by the acclaimed Ukrainian filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa—a name with tremendous influence in contemporary auteur cinema. Loznitsa is known for his documentary and feature films, many of which have been selected for Cannes, Berlin, and other major festivals.

His presence as jury president lends additional weight to the distinction. Ushev notes that Loznitsa’s recognition makes the award “a gift I will remember for a long time.”

The distinction in Beijing is yet another international acknowledgment for Theodore Ushev, who for years has been among the most successful Bulgarian artists in global animation. The director already holds numerous prestigious awards, including an Academy Award nomination.

The story in Life with an Idiot is inspired by the short story of the same name by Viktor Erofeyev. The film employs Ushev’s characteristic visual minimalism, strong expression, and metaphorical imagery, exploring the theme of the clash between individuality and imposed authority.
