Sofia Short Fest Debuts: A Short-Film Celebration with Stefan Komandarev and Ivan Barnev
From June 13 to 15, Sofia will host its first-ever Sofia Short Fest, a freshly minted festival dedicated entirely to short cinema. Organised by Kinematograf and supported by the city’s cultural networks, the festival promises three days of cinematic discovery and vibrant storytelling across multiple screening venues.
At the heart of the event is a prestigious jury featuring two of Bulgaria’s most respected film figures: director Stefan Komandarev and actor Ivan Barnev. Komandarev, with an acclaimed career in directing and screenwriting, brings a discerning eye to the selection process , while Barnev adds depth and insight from his experience in front of the camera.
Over 50 short films from Bulgaria and beyond are set to be presented, offering a kaleidoscope of genres, styles, and voices. From experimental narratives and documentary snapshots to animated fables and fiction dramas, the festival reflects the breadth and innovation thriving within modern short-form cinema.
Beyond screenings, Sofia Short Fest offers an opportunity for cultural connection: panel discussions, filmmaker Q&As, and workshops engage both curious audiences and aspiring creators. Supported by those passionate about film as art and community — from online portals to print media — the festival marks a significant milestone in Bulgaria’s cultural landscape
