Once again, the theatrical community gathered to celebrate the finest achievements in the performing arts – the Ikar 2025 Awards were presented at a glamorous ceremony organized by the Union of Bulgarian Actors. This year, the prestigious accolades paid tribute to the most outstanding productions, talented actors, inspiring directors, and scenographers whose works left a lasting impact on the country’s cultural life.
In the “Best Performance” category, “The Merchant of Venice” by William Shakespeare, directed by Yavor Gardev at the Ivan Vazov National Theater, triumphed, impressing both critics and audiences with its innovative interpretation and emotional depth. The award for “Best Male Role” was given to Samuel Finzi for his portrayal of Shylock in “The Merchant of Venice,” while “Best Female Role” went to Albena Pavlova, who captivated audiences with her performance as Mother Courage in “Mother Courage and Her Children” by Bertolt Brecht, directed by Stoyan Radev at the Aleko Konstantinov Satirical Theater.
The “Best Director” award was won by Zafir Rajab, whose work on “Tribe” showcased an innovative approach and strong visual impact. The “Best Original Music” award went to Vladi Ampov-Grafa for “Pippi Longstocking” based on the book by Astrid Lindgren, adapted by Johan Gille, directed by Ventsislav Asenov at the Nikolay Binev Youth Theater.
A special honor was awarded to Yavor Milushev, who received the Ikar Award for his outstanding contribution to Bulgarian theater.
The Ikar 2025 evening was more than just an awards ceremony – it was a true celebration of theater, highlighting the significance of the arts as an inseparable part of our cultural identity. The event once again proved that the Bulgarian stage is vibrant, innovative, and filled with talent that deserves the highest recognition.
